In the words of Bethany Webster, "It's interesting that we can only come to genuine acceptance and gratitude for what our mothers could give us only after we have honestly acknowledged the difficult feelings about what she could not give us."
Bethany Webster is the first person to ever comprehensively describe the concept known as the Mother Wound.
I first became aware of such phenomenon back in 2023. I've attended an event which combined photography and exploration of one's sensuality. Interestingly, embracing pleasure, sensuality, vulnerability is deeply intertwined with the relationship we have with our inner-mother which enables (or not) our authentic expression.
There I met Camila Godoy - a Cacao and microdosing practitioner, who compassionately guides women towards rediscovering and remothering themselves with the help of sacred plants. Camila's work is deeply connected with the roots of her motherland but it took her years of wandering across the globe to find her own path to her inner-mother and consequently, the work of her ancestors which she embodies through therapeutical use of plants.
My own relationship with my mother has always been a psychological puzzle with scrambled pieces I tried to put together my whole life. Some of which I learned to recognise and assemble in an order, that no longer caused certain personal issues, but one I'm yet to fully integrate and honour.
That's where Mother Wound and Camila's work asks for enormous spotlight in the world of wellness and self-development modalities. Me and Camila joke that "the Mother Wound" is the mother of all wounds. And in this episode, Camila explains why.
"It's not about blaming our mothers. It's about breaking a cycle. This is a cycle that has been repeating for ages. This is why it's so useful to understand the term [Mother Wound] because once you get it, the it's like "OK. I'm breaking a cycle". - Camila Godoy
We explore the concept of the mother wound, a profound element of personal growth and healing. We chat about the impact of the mother wound on women's lives, the role of cacao in remothering ourselves, and the importance of understanding ancestral connections.
Through personal stories and insights, we highlight the challenges of navigating emotional needs and the journey towards authenticity and self-acceptance. We look at how it manifests in relationships and personal behaviors and delve into the importance of recognising personal wounds, patriarchy, the healing process, and the impact of societal expectations on mothers and women as a whole.
So if you are someone who experiences challenges with authentic expression, difficulties setting boundaries, people-pleasing, being harsh on yourself and your body, perfectionism and find yourself putting everyone else ahead of your own needs - you may want to listen to this one.
